Hypnosis for Musicians: Maintaining balance in a tough industry
Whether you are an orchestral musician or in a rock and roll band, the pressures to succeed in the world of music can be extraordinary. Maintaining a balance within yourself is vital while pushing on.
We all have the story of the day we picked up and played our first instrument. Whether it was forced upon you or you actively chose it, a seed that was planted that day kept you going for all these years. Maybe you went on to play in rock bands or maybe you continued on to play in orchestras or just play at home for fun. Whatever you did and whatever path you took, music is a part of you and can never be taken away. This is why I want to teach you about how hypnosis can help you maintain a healthy relationship with yourself and your music career and how you can get started for free today.
The main thing musicians struggle with…
I am hypnotherapist but I have played music all over the world. I have been playing music since I was a child. My mother taught me keyboard when I was 5 years old. I picked up clarinet after that because my sister was playing it. After that I learned drums because my other sister was playing them. Then I chose guitar at 13 years old and became obsessed and started writing my own songs. I have been playing in mostly rock and roll bands for all of my adult life and have toured internationally with it, finding mid-level success in the art-rock band Gustaf, opening for everyone from Jack White to Beck and Joanna Newsom. I have spent thousands of hours with musicians and one of the main things people struggle with is maintaining a healthy balance within themselves while pursuing music.
73% of independent music makers…
The music industry is a tough industry. That is not a secret. We’ve all heard the stories of the musicians who self-medicate because of the pressures of the industry. A recent study done by Record Union, a Swedish digital distribution platform, found that 73% of “independent music makers said that they have experienced negative emotions such as stress, anxiety and/or depression in relation to their music creation.” [1]
The two most common reasons listed for why these musicians feel they have these symptoms are:
fear of failure
financial instability
On top of that, musicians have to handle endless obstacles, from inconsistent schedules to creating endless content. We have to find time to practice, create, perform, handle admin tasks, self-promote, and essentially run our own businesses while trying to find the time to actually enjoy playing music. I have found over and over again that the increasing pressures on musicians to have every social media platform under the sun, a website, a constant flow of content all while looking fresh and confident is taking a toll on us. If the music is doing well and gaining traction, it feels great! If an album flops or an audience isn’t interested in our set, not so great. Trust me, I’ve been through it all.
Just doing it for fun…
Then there are the musicians who are doing it just for fun. If that’s you, you may have another source of income and it really doesn’t matter to your financial well-being if an album sells or not. I’ve been here too. However, I think we all can agree that anything we put our heart and soul into is obviously something we deeply care about and we want it to do well. I find these musicians tend to struggle with finding the energy for their music after a long day at work. It can be very disheartening to have so many creative ideas and desires and have to spend all your time and efforts on other things. They also may struggle from a fear of failure or self-confidence, thinking to themselves that because they aren’t “all in” that they aren’t a “real musician.” Obviously this isn’t true, but can be a story people tell themselves.
How to use hypnosis…
So why am I talking about hypnosis? Because as a musician and a hypnotherapist, I have found that musicians can greatly benefit from hypnosis. I have worked with many musicians to help with their anxiety, fear of failure, stage fright, self-confidence, abundance mentality, creativity and more. Some things musicians may not realize is that a lot of times they enter into a hypnotic state while playing music, which helps them have a deeper hypnosis session by the time they come to me. Hypnosis helps you to connect to your deeper self, the subconscious self, to find and maintain the balance needed while on your musical journey. It is imperative as a musician to maintain and stay true to your highest and greatest good while navigating a tough industry, whether you are a professional or doing it for fun. Through hypnosis we can discover exactly what YOU need to maintain that balance and continue forward on a positive path. The music industry has a lot of changes it still needs to undergo to help support musicians better, but until then we need to use every tool we can to bolster ourselves.
